About Us

Start with the empty room

Here's the advice we'd give a friend who just got the keys: don't buy anything for two weeks.

Live in the room empty. Notice where the afternoon light lands and where it never reaches. Notice which corner you drift to with a coffee, which wall you look at from the couch, which path you walk fifty times a day between the door and the kitchen. An empty room tells you what it needs. A room you've already filled just tells you what you bought.

Most people do it the other way around. They order the sofa, the rug, the lamp and the art in one weekend, from photos, before they've spent a single evening in the space. Then they spend eighteen months telling themselves it's fine.

Hearthfell exists for the people who'd rather get it right once. Everything about how we work follows from that.

Buy in this order

Light first. A room is judged at 8 PM under whatever light you've put in it, not at noon in a product photo. Get the lamps right and an ordinary room looks intentional. Get them wrong and nothing you add afterwards will fix it. Warm bulbs, more than one source, and at least one at eye level or below.

Then the largest textile. The rug decides the size of the room, and it's the piece people get wrong most reliably, always in the same direction: too small. If the front legs of every seat can't sit on it, it's the wrong rug. When in doubt, go up a size. We say that on the product page, and we'll say it again if you ask.

Then the things you'll touch every day. Cushions, throws, the tray on the table, the basket by the door. These are judged by hand, not by eye, so composition and weight matter more than color. A throw that's the wrong weight for your climate gets folded away by March.

Walls last. Art and mirrors are the easiest thing to buy and the last thing to hang, because until the room is settled you don't know what it's looking at. Two frames on a wall that could hold six is the second most common mistake after the rug.

What that means for how we sell

Real dimensions on every page. Not "large," not "generous." Inches and centimeters, and for rugs, lighting and wall pieces, the room size the piece suits and what it looks like in a space that size. If a dimension you need is missing, ask; we'll get it from the spec sheet before you order.

Materials before appearance. Composition and weight decide how a textile drapes, how it wears, and whether it still looks like itself after a year. A photo can't tell you any of that, so we put it in writing.

Pieces that join a room rather than replace one. Almost everyone is adding to something they already own. A piece that only works inside a fully coordinated room isn't décor, it's a commitment, and we mostly don't stock it.

Nothing that dates on a schedule. Décor ages slowly and badly, which is the worst combination. A color or shape that was everywhere one season looks exactly like that season for the next several years you live with it. We pass on most of it.

Ask before you buy

The single most useful email you can send us is a photo of the corner you're trying to fill, with the wall width and ceiling height. From that we can tell you whether a piece works, which of two sizes to take, and whether a fabric will cope with Florida humidity or a north-facing room. If the honest answer is "not this one," you'll get that answer.

We'd rather spend ten minutes helping you choose than process a return on the wrong size. Both are free to you. Only one of them ends with a room you like.

What we won't do

Manufacture urgency. No countdown timers, no "only three left" when there are three hundred, no deadline that resets when you refresh. If something is genuinely running out, we'll say so once.

Chase trends. By the time a trend reaches the shops it's already fading, and unlike a sweater, a lamp doesn't go quietly into the back of a closet.

Overclaim. A cushion will not transform your home. What good décor actually does is quieter: a room stops feeling like it's missing something, and you stop thinking about it. That's a small effect on any given evening and a substantial one over a few thousand of them.
